Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer – R&D provides high-level invention, creativity, design, and development of packaging equipment components and systems to facilitate the manufacture, assembly, and commissioning of new innovations.

Oostburg, WI - USA

 

Hours

Mon - Fri

7:00 AM - 5:00 PM based on departmental needs

(can be flexible)

 

Travel

Minimal, as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Education generally equivalent to a (4) year degree in a Mechanical Engineering program, or related discipline or equivalent experience and specialized training.
  • 1 to 5 years of mechanical design and documentation experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate design.
  • Ability to use various precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, PDM, and various Viking Masek internal systems.

 

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs and/or coordinates packaging equipment mechanical component and mechanical systems design services.
  • Accurately and consistently applies engineering and manufacturing standards.
  • Creates and maintains mechanical component and systems documentation, such as BOMs, spares, flow charts, part drawings, assembly drawings, and schematics.
  • Ensures all R&D projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization’s established policies and objectives.
  • Provides great communication skills, high motivation, and target dates to manager.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Develops and measures progress through metrics and tangible goals.
  • Produces timely and detailed plans, summaries, and status reports
  • Applies engineering principles to design, prototype, test, evaluate, and implement new designs and inventions.
  • Prototypes, validates, and troubleshoots designs, both internally, and with partnered outside customers or service providers.
  • Transitions new designs into production and provides consultation and design support to internal and external resources.
  • Works cross-functionally to improve current product lines.
  • Curiosity and understanding of all engineering disciplines, with ambiguity in exploration and focus on execution.
  • Self-directed and able to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  • Possesses a continuous improvement outlook and suggests, promote,s and champions product changes.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to meet key deadlines and manage changing priorities through effective time management skills.
  • Ability to translate abstract concepts into physical, testable prototypes.
  • Performs sizing and optimization analysis for making design recommendations. Defines and carries out testing to determine relevance of a given design to a customer’s need or product design.
  • Performs strength, sizing calculations or other analytical techniques as needed in the design or modification of packaging equipment.
  • Obtains quotations from vendors and parts set-up in ERP system.
  • Understands packaging machines and processes.
  • Attends training and vendor seminars.

Other Misc. Duties

  • Always sell the Viking Value Proposition.
  • Attend Tradeshows, when necessary, from a Technical resource.
  • Continuous improvement and industry training upkeep.
  • Occasionally works in proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and/or reach above shoulders.
  • May occasionally travel on company business.
  • Adhere to company and departmental SOPs.
  • Follow all company’s filed procedures and protocols.
  • Willing to work with a team to troubleshoot problems.
  • Team player that is a highly disciplined, problem-solver with a strong work ethic.
