Machine Startup & Training

Successful startup is more than turning on a machine. Viking Masek’s Service & Training Model helps ensure your packaging equipment is safely activated, properly optimized, and supported by a team prepared for reliable production.

Our phased approach supports machine activation, commissioning, orientation, operations development, and technical training based on your production requirements and team needs.

What is included in commissioning and orientation?

The Viking Masek Commissioning and Orientation program includes machine activation, machine optimization, and foundational machine familiarization. Together, these steps help bring the machine online, confirm basic functionality, refine performance, and prepare operators and maintenance personnel for safe, reliable production.

STEP ONE

Machine Activation

Machine Activation focuses on safely bringing the packaging machine online and confirming basic functionality before optimization begins.

  • Utility and power verification
  • Air supply confirmation
  • Safety circuit and interlock checks
  • Guard and access panel verification
  • Initial machine power-up and reset
  • Basic motion and first-cycle testing
  • Heater and temperature readiness checks
  • Initial loading of product, film, or bags, as applicable
  • Basic function verification at key machine stations
  • Initial corrections needed to begin controlled operation

Goal: Establish a safe, operational machine that is ready for optimization.

STEP TWO

Machine Optimization

Machine Optimization focuses on refining machine performance so the equipment can run consistently and repeatably in the customer’s production environment.

  • Speed, timing, and temperature adjustments
  • Sealing, filling, registration, or bag-handling optimization
  • Recipe review and refinement
  • Product and material validation
  • Integrated equipment coordination, as applicable
  • Format or changeover adjustments, where required
  • Repeatability checks across multiple cycles
  • Minor process corrections during live operation
  • Review of reject settings and fault responses
  • Final stabilization for production handoff

Goal: Achieve consistent, repeatable machine performance aligned with production requirements.

STEP THREE

Orientation – Machine Familiarization

Orientation provides a foundational introduction to the machine, its operation, and the basic responsibilities of operators and maintenance personnel.

  • Included in standard Commissioning
  • Delivered by a commissioning technician
  • Machine overview and major component identification
  • Basic sequence of operation review
  • HMI and control familiarization
  • Start, Stop, Reset, and Emergency Stop functions
  • Safety overview and guarded area awareness
  • Basic pre-operation checks
  • General loading and operating awareness
  • Review of key operator observations
  • Clarification of when to involve maintenance or service support

Goal: Build baseline operator and maintenance familiarity with the equipment.

STEP FOUR

extended development options

Installation isn’t an end point. Extended Development options are available for customers who need additional hands-on support, deeper technical training, or more time developing operator and maintenance capability after standard commissioning and orientation.

Planning Considerations

Full production planning should allow time for proper startup, commissioning, validation, and team development. Additional support or training can be scheduled based on production goals, machine readiness, operating conditions, and team experience.

Get Hands-On Experience

Operations & Maintenance Development helps customer personnel build practical ability through guided, hands-on machine use in live production conditions.

  • Not included in standard Commissioning and Orientation
  • Delivered by a commissioning or comparable technician
  • Guided machine operation in live conditions
  • Startup and shutdown procedures
  • Product run setup and adjustments
  • Changeover and format setup review
  • Recipe selection and basic adjustment
  • Cleaning and care procedures
  • Preventative maintenance awareness
  • Inspection points and basic upkeep
  • Operator-level troubleshooting
  • Alarm and fault response basics
  • Best practices for stable day-to-day operation

Goal: Prepare customer personnel to operate and support the machine with confidence.

Provide Your Team Technical Training

Technical Classroom Training provides a deeper understanding of machine systems, fault response, troubleshooting methods, and performance optimization best practices.

  • Not included in standard Startup and Commissioning
  • Delivered by a Technical Training and Support Specialist
  • Advanced troubleshooting methods
  • Machine logic and system interaction review
  • Mechanical, electrical, and control system awareness
  • HMI page and fault code review
  • Timing and process relationship discussion
  • Root cause problem-solving approach
  • Maintenance planning and wear-point awareness
  • Performance optimization best practices
  • Technical discussion tailored to operator, maintenance, or leadership roles

Goal: Strengthen technical knowledge for long-term performance, troubleshooting, and support.

Definitions for Successful Alignment

Partnerships thrive on understanding and communication. Here's how we define some key parts of our service and training offerings.

Commissioning: Activation and optimization of equipment designed to confirm operation in alignment with agreed specifications within the customer’s production environment.

Orientation: Foundational equipment orientation providing an initial introduction to operation and baseline familiarity for operators and maintenance personnel.

Operations and Maintenance Development: Practical, hands-on development designed to help the customer build capability in operating and maintaining the equipment with direct guidance during extended live production.

“Our Viking M250 bagger has performed flawlessly since installation back in 2007. In fact, it’s out-performing the specs Viking provided!”
Harris Carver | Atlanta Coffee & Tea
“I chose Viking because I heard they had good field service, and I was new to stick packing. The support is excellent.”
Bob Shapiro | Georgia Spice Company
“Other manufacturers told me it took weeks before their machines were in production. Our Viking was up by noon the second business day.”
Daniel Randall | Green Star Coffee
“The Viking E250 is a great performer and rock solid. We count on it every day and it has never let us down.”
