Trends for Higher Quality Pet Food Extending to Include Pet Treats

Pet food has taken center stage as pet owners want to ensure that their cats, dogs, and other animal companions receive quality food that will improve their health and extend their lives. In 2015, Americans spent $60.8 billion on their pets as $23.05 billion was spent on pet food, according to the American Pet Products Association's (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey. Consumers are demanding high-quality pet foods and are willing to spend their money on such items, as this trend is also beginning to extend to pet treats.

Pet Treat Purchases on the Rise

While at one time consumers considered pet treats an afterthought, this mentality has changed. Pet owners have started to spend more on purchasing pet treats. According to PetFood Industry.com, 16% of pet food spending was focused on the pet treat segment in 2014. In addition, about 77% of dog owners and 56% of cat owners will place some type of pet treat into their grocery baskets in 2015. This figure can be further broken down to dog owners spending $61 on pet treats and cat owners spending $51 on treats annually, as reported by APPA.
